How Are Teams Formed?

Our Division Commissioners follow a strict (and kind of complicated) process to create the most balanced Teams possible. Here's a short overview of how it works:
We determine who will be the Head Coaches for each division. Any Players who were on each Coach's team in the previous season are placed on that Coach's team.
The evaluation scores for each Player on the returning Teams are averaged to determine that Team's total evaluation score.
Players who are not returning to an existing Team this season are assigned a number placed in the "player pool".
Pool Players are divided into groups based on their age and evaluation scores.
Using each Team's total evaluation score, Commissioners determine how many Players from each pool group should be assigned to each Team.
At our Coach's meeting, Coaches take turns blindly drawing the assigned number of Players from each pool group. The pool numbers are written on poker chips for the Coaches to draw!
Commissioners record the numbers drawn by each Coach and transfer the coresponding Players to their new Team.
Coaches do not see evaluation scores at any point, and do not see any Player names until their rosters have been published.
The goal is for each Team to have a near equal total evaluation score, an even mix of ages, and a fair balance of pitchers and catchers. While there are some factors that can slightly affect the outcome (like Players who were not able to attend evaluations or an uneven mix of ages in the division), we work hard to create the most balanced Teams with the information we have available. Our blind draw Player Pool ensures Coaches can not select specific Players, and Commissioners may not manage a Division that they Coach in or that their child plays in to avoid a conflict of interest.
Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about Teams & rosters:
Can I switch to a different Team? | No, we do not allow swapping Teams. We understand that sometimes families prefer a certain schedule or want to play with a friend - please understand, we have more than 500 Players, and it is impossible to accommodate every Player's requests. To maintain fairness and consistency for all families, we do not make exceptions. |
What if my Player wasn't able to attend evaluations? | No problem! We hope to get as many evaluation scores as possible, but we don't expect to get everyone. Players who were not evaluated are placed in a pool group to be drawn evenly by Teams. Coaches don't see evaluation scores or know who was or was not evaluated. |
How do you select the Head Coaches? | Commissioners assess the Volunteers in their Division. If there are not enough Volunteers, we contact other Parents in the Division to round up more. If there are too many Volunteers, priority is typically given to Coaches with the most Players returning to their team. |
How do I find out what Team I'm on? | Rosters are published toward the end of March. When your Team information is available, you'll be able to see it on your dashboard. Log in to the web portal, tap your name in the top right corner, and select Dashboard. |
